This photograph is the first of a series of black and white portraits inspired by german expressionism and mute cinema. It was shot with a Sony A7ii in a park in France. It was winter, the sun was about to fall. What i wanted to focus on was the expression of a character somehow lost, looking to escape or to invite us inside an other world: Inside but Elsewhere.

What inspired you to make those photographs?
Well, i am mostly a photographer of portraits and events. So when i thought about how i wanted to show a series of photographs, a few ideas came up. I wanted to distance myself from traditional every day portraits, and i always loved black and white portraits. Then, i realised that i had been inspired very soon in my life by german expressionism films like The Cabinet of Dr Caligari or mute cinema, films of Joseph Von Sternberg etc where the focus was really on faces and raw emotions. So i started to think about a certain type of moodboard, light and i contacted a model that i worked with on a meetup.
Did you have a definitive idea of what it was gonna look like?
To some extent, but i was really surprised at how well the model fitted in the whole concept. After the shoot, when i really started to edit the pictures and refined the look i wanted, i felt the whole series (a dozen of photographs) revealed her as a character that was a compromise between the emotions i wanted to show and what she was interested to express through my directions.
